The climate crisis is escalating faster than most people imagined. We must act now to change critical dimensions of the tasks, structures, and day-to-day practices of our companies. Just as human civilization moved from the Agricultural Era to the Industrial Era, and from the Industrial Era into the Digital Era, we are now simultaneously moving into two eras at once. While every day we are getting deeper into the Digital Era, we are also taking the first steps into the emerging Regenerative Era.
A CDP report found that some companies (those who are positioned to win or adapt) also see potential in responding to climate change. According to a New York Times article “Some 225 of the world’s largest corporations highlighted roughly $2.1 trillion of possible opportunities in a warming world, with the majority expected to materialize within the next five years.”
So how will companies get there?
Leading the Way
Leaders who do not treat the emerging regenerative reality as a priority are simply ceding opportunity to those who do. Now is the time to engage with the disruptive forces reshaping virtually every industry by turning radically disruptive signals into strategy, and strategy into action. This is the time for each enterprise to re-envision itself for the new emerging era, to re-think its operations and organization, to innovate its offerings, and to build a culture where its people are inspired and enabled to create the future together.
To paraphrase Microsoft’s Chief Environment Officer Lucas Joppa, every company in every sector of the global economy will be transformed in the coming 8-10 years with a singular focus on climate impacts and benefits. This will require entirely new levels of innovation throughout every enterprise and a unique ability to continually engage all stakeholders.
