During the 2017 hurricane season, the Coast Guard leadership quickly became aware that lessons learned from previous major contingency events had not become lasting improvements to Coast Guard operations. Some of these lessons were event vital to the safety of both victims and Coast Guard responders. Those items had not been accomplished prior to the Deepwater Horizon explosion, and again not accomplished prior to Superstorm Sandy.
