Object model upgrade for supporting Cloud Computing Model

Nagios Object Model must be review and upgraded in order to fully support the new challenge that Virtualization and Cloud Computing models represent: Hosts and services changing from location, appearing and dissapearing based not in phisical needs but in dynamic, load-driven needs, with multiple parental relations....

Support for hysteresis, so that different ok, warning and critical thresholds can be specified for different host/service states.

For example, I would like to specify that a disk goes into the warning state when it reaches 80% used capacity, but does not go back into ok until used capacity decreases below 75%. Another example is with ping, if I set the packet loss warning threshold to 20%, I want Nagios to remain in the warning state until the packet loss decreases below 10%.

This also prevents many cases of flapping. Today, if I set the ping round-trip-time (RTT) to 200 ms, the RTT to a host may go up and down between 199 ms and 201 ms, sending out loads of notifications without any real change in the RTT. If I could specify that to reach the OK state from the Warning state, the RTT must pass below 150 ms, there would be far fewer notifications for small variations in RTT around the threshold value.

Easier integration with Excel by modifying avail.cgi

avail.cgi should be able to be fully functional within a URL-length of 255 characters for integration with Excel. Excel supports web datasources with a max URL-length of 255 characters. Optional short-form for query parameters and values should be made. f.ex query parameter "timeperiod" could be "tp" and the value "thismonth" could be "5" (as it is internally in avail.cgi). Also the query parameter "csvoutput" could be "csv", optionally change default output to csv and make a param for creating html as browsers should support longer URLs.

Comments (0)    Nagios "Core"

Port Enumeration

1

Vote On Idea

Enumerating ports on switches is difficult to get right. It seems that the accepted way right now is more of a hack around the system than a smooth addition.

It would be nice if Nagios had a method by which a port could be added to the system as a "child" of a host. Pseudocode might help here :

define host {
use  switch-standard
host_name switch.example.com
address  192.168.0.1
hostgroups  switch-hosts
}

define host-port {
use  switch-port-standard
host_name switch.example.com
alias Port G0/1 - web server
portgroups switch-ports
parents  web.example.com
}

So in the above example, switch.example.com is a switch of some sort. The second entry is a port on that switch. Essentially, Nagios would inherit the address from the host, using that as the address for any port checks. By default, I would expect that either there is no "host check" on the port, or that the check would be an SNMP get to determine the ifOperStatus. Services could be tied to the host-port the same way they are to a host and the relevant information would be inherited by the port.

This would make port enumeration MUCH cleaner.

Comments (0) Nagios "Core", port, enumeration, config

Add the ability to monitor a service that has both a space AND a $ in the name. It seems that using check_nt to monitor a service like MSSQL$INSTANCE will only work if the command is written as such:
check_command check_nt!SERVICESTATE!-d SHOWALL -l MSSQL"$$"INSTANCE
but what if you have a service name that has a space AND a $ in it?

For services with spaces in the names, the entire service name has to be wrapped in quotes. Nagios doesn't like this if you have to wrap $$ in quotes on top of this. For instance, check_command check_nt!SERVICESTATE!-d SHOWALL -l "SAMPLE MSSQL"$$"INSTANCE" will not work unless I'm missing something?

Greetings!
I am very glad that you exist and actively develop Nagios.
I work in the big company (more than 10 000 employees) and I use nagios for monitoring of critical objects.
I wish to offer function which is easily programmed and also very useful. At night my Operators on duty is often dissatisfied false positives with service check with SOFT state. It sometimes happens for various reasons (the big load of CPU, delays in a network, etc.). Function as in Nagvis when the sound notification works only in a condition of check state HARD is very necessary.
It will be better that you realise it in the nagios CGIs.
Very much I hope that you will listen to this council as it is really convenient.
Thanks you for your work.

Service State auto-escalation/graduation

I'd like to see graduated service checks which are dependent upon number of checks or amount of time performed on a service; i.e. if a service stays in WARNING state for longer than X times or T minutes (continuously) , it will automagically escalate to CRITICAL state; similarly, once a state goes OK, allow it to remain in WARNING state for X times or T minutes (continuously) kind of as a "Hey, keep an eye on this" kind of thing.

Decouple notification attributes from hosts and services and either just use the escalation type to describe notification policies or rename it to be a notification type.

The problem with the notification attributes being meshed into hosts and services comes when host -> hostgroup -> service mappings are used with multiple different configuration editors working on a Nagios configuration; since only *one* policy can exist for a host or service, with the group mappings escalations then have to be used.

If those started as a separate type it would be SO MUCH easier to grow a Nagios configuration easily - escalations have *the perfect* syntax for a notification object as host, hostgrup, service, etc is all contained within the escalation object.

a host or service should not know nor care about notification policies.

I am able to do build installs of Nagios. I am mostly using Mac OS X and use MacPorts to get nagios. But there are machines I cannot put development tools on. And if I want to use some other architecture for running nagios, I have to have two of that platform? Typical documenation
flaws, sigh, again..

Anyway i found the solution,
follow the updated documentation to the letter...
then install these 2 packages

sudo apt-get install php5
sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5
you might need to kick nagios apache services as well..
I hope this serves others well, hoping to upgrade.
The reason for the upgrade to hopefully resolve scheduling problems
where if ntp drops the system time back one second or so nagios goes a
little wobbily with scheduling described here :
http://archive.netbsd.se/?ml=nagios-devel&a=2008-09&t=8455575

Regards..

I have not posted this anywhere else on the net...

Easy Editing and Deletion

-7

Vote On Idea

I wish it were easy to edit and delete hosts and services in Nagios. All I wanted to do was rename some of the hosts and now because I did, they are unable to be synced. Even if I delete them fully in configuration to start over, they persist. This is a major bug and is totally unacceptable. Even small time freeware monitors can do this correctly with ease.
