With local media banned from recording meetings in order to protect councillors and staff it then seems counterproductive to then put recordings online. What do others think?

how about a discussion on these issues plus other legal issues pertaining to the web? eg. copyright, the spam act, etc.

I don't think I went to that session last year, but this would defenately be something I would be interested in... I remember having quite a heated argument to a Department Manger about why all his stuff couldn't go on the home page!! How do we explain in simple terms to other departments what can and can't go on the site, and how its suppose to go. They always want their stuff on the home page, or as its own section on the left hand menu!

What a wonderful idea!! I hope it works... I know alot of smokers (who are happy smoking) will hate the idea, but when it saves them from cancer, and that horrible cough, I'm sure they will be thanking the system... Sorry all, but its a yucky habbit anyway!

What a great idea. As long as its kept to common programs like Paint and Office Programs if possible. I think most places would have these???

Well, looking at my notes on Ben's talk from last year it does seem like he addressed what I had in mind! I'm not sure why his talk didn't stick in my head, my notes are gold!
Maybe more of a pep talk then. It's just so depressing when you feel like you are getting nowhere with people. ;p

I understand that it's a record-keeping problem not a software problem but it's the practical side that I think is the hardest when it comes to web records. I know what I need to capture; but how do I actually do it in a sustainable automated way? I really hope that this workshop can be practical as well as theory.

Hi magia3,

I like the suggestion for the executive breakfast to reach people at that level. However that's not the target audience for our conference, we're aiming at staff level, people who actually work on the web day in day out.

Reem and I will look at holding an Executive lunch/breakfast into the lead-up to the conference though as it would be great to raise awareness at that level, and hopefully gain some support for the web staff in attending our conference.

Last year's presentations generally fell into strategic and tactical categories, even though the streams weren't necessarily organised as such.

Introducing a web technical classification into the tactical stream would certainly be of benefit to those who have a technical bent. However, there are other conferences like WebDu and Web Directions, for example, that probably cater better to this type of audience.

1) executive breakfast -- this could bring in higher level managers with a presentation on what's hot at a local gov level in relation to strategy

2) round-table facilitated discussion. give each table a topic and have people move from table to table after 10 minutes. the facilitator is just there to expedite discussion amongst the table rather than specifically leading discussion

I agree that the topic of recordkeeping and websites would be a good one to look at -- both from a strategic as well as tactical perspective.

There's lots of misunderstandings about the legislation as well as what is practical and possible today, including archiving, backups, and metadata.

There's not a lot of records managers either who know how to handle electronic documents in a way that doesn't reflect a paper world who can give advice on this topic.

An indicator of technical leave would be very useful, and to also break it up to categories like Communications, marketing etc would be good

I do like this idea but maybe it would be good as well if people could apply the same rating to themselves when they register? That way those doing the presentations would have a better idea of how to pitch their material.

We regularly present Introduction to Internal Consulting and Handling Difficutl People workshops at the LGSA's LG Learning Solutions. The Internal Consulting propgram helps you to probe deeper into what clients need (rather than what they want) and Handling Difficult People covers behavioural styles ie why do you react the way you do when faced with a difficult person and what to do about it. Email us for more information. This might also be a good non technical but interactive conference topic.

We had Ben Buchanan last year speaking about "steering the iceberg" but from the feedback we received, people didn't seem to get what he was talking about. Could you please go and listen to his preso (on the conference page) and tell me if this is close to what you are asking for? I really would like to clarify this so we get the right person for you.

wish this would get more votes than the food topic :) seriously, I agree with this important topic. As well as buy-in, some methods for dealing with those people who insist they know what are the best web practices (eg. "why cant we put x on the homepage / why cant we use 'click here' since I see it all the time")

Hi guys, We really nee to focus this topic as it's not about using TRIM or other doc management software, but learning how and what web records need to be kept and by who..so though TRIM and other systems maybe spoken about, it's not really the thrust of the topic

Sounds good - and some chance to meet in smaller groups helps give a chance for us to swap problems and advice about more specific details of a workshop topic.

I don't know how you would do this, but I see a huge disconnect in what someone who works on the web full-time needs and someone who has it as one of their many jobs. Perhaps these kind of indicators could be considered too.

Interesting proposal. Local-e currently doesn't have any partnerships except with Bang The Table.
What kind of relationships, or topics/issues were you looking at finding out more about from NSW Tourism and Dept of Lands?

Great idea, some low tech & creative stuff would be good - "cool icons" etc (more appearance stuff) for the non IT people. Writing for web & how to make accessible for vision impaired (touched on importance of it last time) - how to accomplish would be of interest.

We have indeed been speaking with State Records on a longer term NSW wide approach to this problem, as it's not limited to what CMS you use! State Records are currently coming up with a flowchart to assist in decision making about what needs to be kept, for how long and in what format. We'll be working very closely with them to develop this and then distribute it to everyone. We are also going to be building in this topic as part of the LGWebNetwork wiki so you'll have access to shared resources, assistance and discussions on the topic.

What a great idea!! Last year I went into what I thought was going to be a helpful topic for me, and found that it was way over my head! I could have joined in on the other discussion if I had known! Thats a great way to stop this problem.
