Awareness. Is it Personal ore do we Share it?

0

Vote On Idea

I have come to a consensus that consciousness is more of a shared phenomina and that we all (including other animals) share the same awareness but our privacy stems from the more 'mechanical' make up of our brains. Memory and personality are more to do with how we are wired up and genetics plus experience lend to this.

If it were possible to exchange the awareness a cat has to that of the self, Then I would speculate to say that the cat would still be confined by the restrictions of its bioological make up as we would. While it is impossible to say what awareness is or means, I see no problem in assuming that, like an ether, awareness is a continium shared amongst all things.
I sometimes wonder whether water pays a part?

If possible, video and/or audio recordings of each workshop and presentation would be great, even if these are just short highlights of the best moments. Also, handouts from all the sessions in the conference pack would be very handy.

Could there be some discussion on the issues involved in uploading recordings of Council meetings on the website, eg privacy, editing of the recording prior to uploading, no "parliamentary privilege" protection for councillors and staff, councils' liability as the publisher, recommended timeframes for uploading and removing, records management of recordings, prevention of a recording being modified once downloaded etc.

We have been tossing up on the idea of using survey's on several different matters. EG - Website improvements, Department Satisfaction, How can we improve ect? There are several different systems that can do this, Survey monkey being one of the best ones I have used. If other people think this would be interesting, it would be good even just as a discussion to find out how we should be using these.

How to optimise photos for web display and short download time
building a scenic collage for web page display - keeping in mind download time and large file sizes. Taking good digital photos with correct light requirements - Creating a local (Offline) gallery of stock photos - walking, walking with dogs, biking with local backdrops, recreational/sporting facilites, schools etc. Ideal and consistant photo sizes, presentation of images like watermarks, cropping (there could be lots to cover or just a quick overview - there may be too many software programs out there to cover all this in one session).
Creating an animation where an image fades into the next image.
Images just make a page more interesting to view.

I am interested in hearing from those councils who have taken the plunge and used social media. The senior exec are often frightened of using this medium due to it's uncontrollable nature however I think there is a lot to be gained especially with event promotion and possibly even consultation. I want to hear from those who have had success and also the horror stories.

How do we measure what we (website teams / managers) do?

The necessity of meaningful KPI? Whether we like it or not we need to measure how well we (people managing websites) are doing, if we provide good service to community and internal publishing and advice. Sure we can measure a website visits pageviews and bounce rates... but it brings up larger question more visits are good, longer visits are good or bad? Who is the primary audience of council website?
Sharing of ideas about meaningful way of measuring how well we are doing.
Maybe in a way of poll and 10 min talk?

Learning more about systems and technology is great, but when the rubber hits the road we need to get buy-in from our colleagues or nothing happens. Some sort of management/psychology session on working with other departments would be good.

I would like to learn more about this - especially using the Local-e system. eg - what are we required to keep and how can we keep them using Council's record keeping systems such as TRIM. We touched on it a bit last year - but would like more information on how to impliment this using the programs we have.

Lightning Talks:

At Linux.conf.au we have a process called lightning talks where people get a couple of minutes to talk about a project they are involved with and what they are doing.

Basically it's a way of introducing people and projects without the need for a formal "Talk/Workshop"

Tech level indicators

We know from last year that we had a wide variety of people who came, some were fully fledged coders, and others only were involved in the web as part of their role. So some people were looking for the really techi topics whilst others were more interested in communications and the basic tech stuff.

Would you find it useful to have an indicator showing the technical level of the content to help you choose which conference stream to go to?

Would you like this simply as low, med, high tech. Or prefer something like: high tech, low tech, creative, writing, etc to indicate the subject as well?

Let us know.

Comments (7)Conference format, technical, indicators, sessions

A new conference format: a day of workshops

This year we decided to have one day of workshops and one day of the conference with shorter presentations of around 30 mins to an hour, similar to last year.

Workshops will likely run for a half day. This will allow you to get more in-depth training in a specific field. We will hopefully run 6 workshops depending on the feedback we get.

Let us know if you like this idea, or have any comments on the conference format.
